New information is available on the storage and use of biodiesel in Canada.
The federal government and several industry representatives jointly funded the research in order to provide guidelines for biodiesel used in heating and transportation.
The research was conducted at Imperial Oil's Sarnia Research Centre.
The research found that one way of maintaining adequate fuel flow is by limiting the level of saturated monoglycerides in biodiesel, which is important for low-temperature storage and operating furnaces as well as motor vehicles.
Some other findings include:
- using antioxidants during long-term biodiesel storage can assure product stability
- up to 10 per cent of biodiesel content in heating oil shouldn't cause performance issues in furnaces.
Peter Boag, president of Canadian Petroleum Products Institute (CPPI), said that the research could be used to direct renewable diesel blending formulation.
Standard-setting bodies, like the Canadian General Standards Board, could also use the findings to ensure new fuels meet consumer needs.
The research report is available at the CPPI's website.
